Attitudes towards Air Pollution among University Students Research Proposal Research specific topic The topic of the study is â€Å"Attitudes towards Air Pollution among University Students†. Rationale of the study Ramanathan Feng (2009) claim that â€Å"Every part of the world is connected with every other part through fast atmospheric transport.† This has made us think that the negative effects of air pollution will not only happen in one region, but also take place in other areas. Air pollution causes many side effects on health, environment and economy. According to the WHO, in 2012, 7 million people died as a result of air pollution. Moreover, the WHO assessment found the majority of air pollution deaths were linked with cardiovascular disease, heart disease, stock, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. We feel that not so many people concern of this issue. Consequently, we decide to conduct a research on the topic of â€Å"Attitudes toward Air Pollution among University Students† as we believe that university students may have studied some subjects regarding to this problem. In addition, the major reason that encouraged us to conduct a research on this topi c is to discover how much university students know about air pollution. Another factor is to explore the effective methods that university students can think of to prevent themselves from the negative effects of air pollution. On top of that, providing the best solution to solve the entire problem by university students is also another main purpose of doing this research. The research finding will help to encourage university students to get involved more in this problem and spread the information to the public so that more people will join in addressing this issue. Research aim The aim of the study is to know about attitudes towards air pollution among university  students. Research objectives and research questions Research objectives To find out the university students’ perception towards air pollution To determine the ways that students can prevent themselves from the negative effects of air pollution To ascertain the solutions that university students can think of to address this issue Research questions How do university students think about air pollution? How can university students prevent themselves from the negative effects of air pollution? What are the solutions to this issue raised by university students? Literature review Operational definition â€Å"Air pollution was defined as the presence in the outdoor and /or indoor atmosphere of one or more contaminants or combinations thereof in such questions and of such duration as maybe or may tend to be injurious to human, plant or animal life, or property or which unreasonably interferes with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property or the conduct of business† (Wark, K., et al 1998). Attitude is a feeling or opinion about something or someone. Theoretical framework Among the most pressing of today’s environmental issues is the pollution of the air we breathe, that the world is concerning about. There are many countries that are affected and some are being put on. â€Å"More than 10 million people in eight different countries are at serious risk for health because they live in the polluted places† (West, 2014). Therefore, it has become a problem which many researchers have been studying and finding the causes as well as the solution. According to the Environmental protection Agency, there are a great number of types of air pollution such as pollution from industries, vehicles, stationary items etc. This shows that air pollution is really a concerning issue that we cannot ignore, and more research about the solution is needed to enhance the understanding of it. Some people have already known about air pollution. Groot (1967) claims that â€Å"In the most recently completed study; however, a cross-sample of the whole United States revealed that 48% of all people thought air pollution to be at least a somewhat serious problem for their area of residence.† More importantly, some researchers tend to conduct a research on the attitude of students towards air pollution, which is an attractive factor. The study on students’ attitudes has been carrying out to explore the factors which provoke to find out the solution because they may have studied about environment. â€Å"Research has shown that university students who have studied courses specializing in the environment maintain more pro-environmental attitudes than other students† (Meinhold Malkus 2005). â€Å"It was also found that demographic factors such as gender and years of education may have some influence on one’s attitude and pro-environmental behaviors† (Fernandez Rodriguze, Carrasquier, 2007; Tuncer, Ertepinar, Tekaya, Carrasquier, 2007). After realizing about this, researchers can go further to identify how university students think about air pollution. Some university students have expressed their concern about air pollution. Al. Rabaani Al-Mekhlafi (2009) claim that â€Å"Air pollution is a problem which has recently become a cause of concern, due to accelerated economic development, an increase in transportation; this may account for students’ increasing concern with the problem.† We have tried to find the other researchers’ finding about the perceptions of university students toward air pollution, the methods to prevent themselves from the negative effects of air pollution and their solutions to solve the problem, but we can find only their perceptions. Conceptual framework The study will focus on only attitudes of university students towards air pollution since we still believe that university students’ perception will lead other university students and people to get involved more in this problem. Meinhold Malkus (2005) claim that university pupils doing the course related to environment have expressed more reactions toward air pollution than those who do not. Demographic factors such as gender and years of education may make one’s reaction and pro-environmental behaviors vary† (Fernandez Rodriguze, Carrasquier, 2007; Tuncer, Ertepinar, Tekaya, Carrasquier, 2007).The accelerated economic development and the rise of transportation have made air pollution become and increase university’s concern (Al. Rabaani Al-Mekhlafi, 2009). The research instrument Within this research, questionnaire will be used as the tool for data collection. The reason we finally select questionnaire is that it is easier than conducting interview with respondents; they just read the questions, interpret what is expected then write down their answers. In  addition, students at IFL who will be respondents are busy with their study, so they do not have enough time to be interviewed. The questionnaire consists of three sections. The first section is about the respondents’ sex, age, statue, the living condition, and how they travel. The second section focus on whether they concern about air pollution or not. The last section is about their attitude to air pollution, how it occurs and how to solve the problem. We predict that the questionnaire will take time around 10 minutes because we think that they will have enough time to think deeply to understand the questions. Some students will probably just answer the questions while others may broaden their information. However, we might face some problems; some of them might just tick the answers and some just keeping blank on the answer spaces because they may think that it is a waste of time. Therefore, if that case happens, we will have to look for others to reach our 200 respondents. We will provide the questionnaires for the other class, but this time we will increase 5 minutes more for them to answer the questions. Respondents The study population of this research is the undergraduate students from year two to year three at the Department of English, Institute of Foreign Languages, Royal University of Phnom Penh. The reason is that the courses at IFL provide topics about environment and there are many programs that are related to the saving environment like clean up day etc. The total sample size is 100 students, who are 50 students in year two and 50 students in year three and studying in the morning shift. Data-collecting procedures The questionnaires will be carried out directly at Institute of Foreign Languages (IFL). Participants will be provided the questions before the break time in their classrooms. For the data collecting process, we will divide our members into two different groups and each group has two members. Group one will be responsible for year two students and group two for year three students. Each member in the group will be waiting for respondents to finish their answers and help students to understand the questions. However, before we provide questionnaire, we will have to ask for permission from the lecturers first. The Supernatural in Shakespeares Works Essays -- William Shakespeare

The Supernatural in Shakespeare's Works No one questions the fact that William Shakespeare is a pure genius when it comes to creating immortal characters whose characteristics transcends those of the normal supernatural beings, but most students of literature agree that his uses of the supernatural aren’t merely figments of his creative imagination. Every man, woman, and child is influenced by the age into which they are born and Shakespeare was no exception. Not only does his use of supernatural elements within his works reveal the Elizabethans’ obsession with mythical beliefs, but it also reveals his attitude toward these beliefs at different points of his writing career. Because of the profound understanding of the beliefs of his time, Shakespeare was able to create masterpieces that critics and readers have respected all over the world. In Shakespeare’s time, the belief in the presence and power of the supernatural touch life at every point. Customs were formed by it and behavior was dictated by it. Not only did the poor believe in it, but all classes of people were under its spell from nobles to the poor. It governed people’s lives down to the smallest details. They carried charms and mascots, found horror in spilling salt and walking under ladders, and dreaded the thirteenth of Friday (May 35-38). They believed that all supernatural elements were at work. The Elizabethans had always been susceptible to belief in the supernatural. As May notes, these people more that other people questioned matters beyond their vision (39). Shakespeare was clearly influenced by his race. He had an inquiring mind that refused bondage by the limitations of matter (Mish 28). Listing the numberless superstitions that Shakespeare gathered from his environment would be impossible. May believes that it is because his own observations of the habits of animals and plants were explained by stories that were more myth that truth. Elizabethans also gave superstitious explanations for changing weather and season, phase of life, and sickness and death (59-63). As a youth, Shakespeare was susceptible to all kinds of influences around him. Due to the widespread obsession with the supernatural, Shakespeare was compelled as a writer to adopt the views of the majority. The people who crowed the theaters and paid the money demanded fairies, ghost, and witches, and all the commonly h... ...onio for the terrible wrong he has don and no traces of anger or resentment linger. In this final play the supernatural is entirely beneath the control of man. All authority is taken form the spirits in The Tempest and the power to harm is gone. Shakespeare’s state of mind is best expressed at this point when Prospero reveals how man has at last attained dominion over the forces of evil (Schiller 378). William Shakespeare was a genius. Not only was he able to use the supernatural in his works to the fullest extent of Elizabethan belief, but he was skillful at molding the supernatural into remarkable assets to his plot. However, Elizabethan beliefs weren’t the only influences that shoved their way into the meanings of his plays. His whole outlook on life also played a major part in the way that he shaped the supernatural. Not only does his use of supernatural elements within his works reveal the Elizabethans’ obsession with mythical beliefs, but it also reveals his attitude toward these beliefs at different points of his career. His remarkable handling of the supernatural is on reason why William Shakespeare is generally regarded as the greatest writer of English literature.

Life without Modern Gadgets Essay

A lifestyle without the modern gadgets, sounds quite a hard life to live. But lets look deep and analyse both sides of this. Life de-modernised would be a time consuming one requiring a lot of time and effort, for example, can u imagine urself carrying around your home stereo, you cannot!!.. instead we have mp3 players and iPod’s too boost our speed in life. Although there are so many negatives to be seen on the surface when considering a lifestyle without modern gadgets, we as people have actually forgotten the beauty and simplicity of life without modern technology. The simplicity of learning to do things by yourself instead of a ‘machine’, the simplicity of working together physically instead of creating your ‘own workspace at home’ as ‘teleworking’, confining you to a lonesome boundary in life giving you all the opportunity to procrastinate in ur own home.. Technology is good but has also brought people to a height of extreme convenience where we easily forget our roots of simplicity. Time is very precious in today’s era. Everyone wants to do things in very short span. The quotation â€Å"Stitch in time saves nine† means if you finish something in time, you will be able to do ten things in the time you saved. Keeping this in view, scientists and technologysts developed many new things to save as much time as possible. In each and every sphere of life we can find machines and gadgets that saves our time a lot. Wether it is business, transport, education, communication, new technology did a lot. ATM is one of the inventions of time saving gadgets. ATM is expanded as Automated Teller Machine. Or sometimes we can also say it as Any Time Money machine which is true in its sense. We can draw money at any instance of time with the help of ATM, a day or mid-night, in emergencies, or when we shop we need not have to carry cash, we simply apply the credit or debit card, same like ATM card. Initially, we have to stand in long ques to draw money out of banks, sometimes, the employees are absent, there is some holiday in bank or strike of workers hence we have to sit back without money and our work remains pending for several days. There was a boy named Salim, he went to factory every day for his life earnings, early morning he used to went and came back in the evening. One day, his owner wants rent. When he came back in evening he found a board at his door, it was written on the board, that if he didn’t pay rent by morning, he will be out from the room. He was very upset, he talked to the owner and takes the deadline of next evening. He thought that he will take a leave from office and will draw money from bank and give it to the owner. Next morning, he went to the bank, and he find a long que, he was bit upset, but he have to give money before deadline. He stand in the que in the last place, when he was near his turn, he found that the strike break down in the area. Every shop and office went close. The bank also closed due to strike. He was upset and he again came back home without money. Again on TV he found that the strike will remain stir for next 2 days. Hence, this is the best example of giving the importance of ATM in our daily life. Our life was like miscommunicated without these gadgets.

Scholarly Text Reflection

My scholarly text â€Å"How useful is plantations in learning anatomy' was written by a group of researchers. Some elements that helped me comprehend the text w as the vocabulary because it was anatomy terminology that is in my anatomy and physiology cal as. What also helped me was the texts formation because it was in order from the experiment .NET that was taken place. I was also familiar with the tables and charts in the article as well.Some key ideas from the text that I understood was the type of experiment the at was being made along with why and what it was for. Also knew what plantations was b cause of the surrounding vocabulary that helped me figure out what it meant, it means the hands on work with materials and cadavers. I believe that the plantations works well with lea ring anatomy or any subject with students learning about it. These contribute because it all reel dates back to anatomy and the human body and the subject of the article.One place that confused me or prov okes a question is the tables and charts. T here are some words and numbers on them that don't make sense because don't know w what they refer to. Although understand most of the table and its data, I don't fully get it. A s tragedy could use to address my confusion with is to reread the text that talks about the tables and charts, then go over the tables and charts again. If still can't figure out my confusion I would ask my teacher for help or from an expert.
